1886 Born 9 February in Erkner near Berlin, the eldest son of the poet and dramatist Gerhart Hauptmann and Marie Thienemann

1894 With separation of his parents goes to live with Mother and brothers in Dresden. During these years he came into contact with numerous avant-garde artists who were friends of his parents. These included Ludwig van Hoffmann, Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Max Klinger and the young Otto Mueller.

1903 Hauptmann began his art study at the Academie Julian in Paris and with Lovis Corinth in Berlin.

1904-1908 Continued his studies with Ludwig van Hoffmann in Weimar. Here he made many friendships with fellow students including Hans Arp, Otto Illies, the master pupil Henry van de Veldes and Maurice Denis.

1909-1912 returned to Paris to the Academie Ranson. Aquaintance with de la Fesnaye, Friesz, Maillol, Rilke, Rodin, and most importantly, Paul Signac. Under influence of Signac, Hauptmann turned to neo impressionism and became a member of the Societe Independantes.

1912 Returned to Germany and married Erica von Scheel

1912-1923 Except for the war years of 1915/18 lived in Dresden, Hamburg and Berlin. He was in contact with von Hoffmann, Otto Mueller, Illies, Kokoschka, etc.

1920 founder member of Frien Sezession Berlin

1925 Full time resident of Hamburg. Works became more representative of Northern German expressionism.

1928-1933 Vice chairman of the Hamburgischen Sezession

1945 Re-establishment of Hamburgischen Sezession with Hauptmann as Chairman.

1955-1965 Vice president of the Frien Akademie der Künste in Hamburg Ivo Hauptmann was awarded numerous prizes and honours in his later life and was represented by numerous exhibitions.

1973 Died on 28 September in Hamburg, aged 87
